MY REVIEW

I don't know about you but my life get incredibly insane sometimes. Take for instance this week. I was scheduled to write my review on this book a couple of days ago but do to circumstances out of my control I had to reschedule my post. 

One of the things I like about devotionals is they allow me to slow down for a couple of minutes and take a breath, pause and reflect on the wonderful things and aspects of God. 

Joanna Weaver has written such a devotional. At the Feet of Jesus: Daily Devotions to Nurture a Mary Heart. Take today's devotional reading for instance: the first verse is: "Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep." Luke 15:6. Then she takes a page from one of her books she has written, and for today it is from Lazarus Awakening. You will have to read November 1 to know what it says. Then there is some verses to read and a something to reflect on. This days' is "What does it mean to you to realize that Jesus would leave the many to find the one who is lost?"

What a thought to reflect on! Now throughout my hectic day that question will go through my mind and allow me to give thanks to the Great Shepherd who found me and give more thanks to the sheep He will find today.

One of the things I really enjoy about this devotional is it's simplicity; yet at the same time the questions posed at the end of each one allows for deep thought throughout my busy day. 

Just as in her Bible studies, Joanna Weaver has done an outstanding job in putting this devotional together. Her style of writing makes for easy reading and her heart for Jesus is poured out in this book. Her desire for women to truly have a Mary heart in a Martha world is evident in this devotional. 

I would recommend this devotional to all women who need to take a breath, stop and reflect on the saving grace of our Lord. That includes me!

Truth & Dare: One Year of Dynamic Devotions for Girls By Ann-Margret Hovsepian

I have a granddaughter who will be nine next year and when I saw this book I wanted to see if it would be something she could get into. So I sent my request  and The B & B Media Group, Inc sent me this review copy. 

Truth & Dare is written for tween girls. When I first looked at it and started reading through it I thought to myself, this is a book my granddaughter would like. 

Each day starts off with a bible verse, a "Truth" and a "Dare." Then there's a place for a girl to write her thoughts down on what she has learned. What a wonderful way to encourage young girls to journal.

For the weekend there is a small "quiz" that helps them remember what they learned throughout the week and a "Got More Time?" section that suggests other things they can do.

The only drawback I see about this book is the size. It may be a bit intimidating for a young tween. Though it's packed with many wonderful things, just the thickness of the book may cause them to be hesitant to start reading it. (Not everyone is a bookworm like me or my granddaughter.)

But other than that, it's a wonderful devotional and I believe the girls it's targeted for will get a lot out of it.

She has published more than 210 articles for dozens of Canadian and U.S. print periodicals and has become a sought-after author of pre-teen girls' devotional books. She has published Blossom: The Complete New Testament for Girls (Thomas Nelson, 2006) and The One Year Designer Genes Devo (Tyndale, 2007). Every day there is a short biography about someone from the history of Christianity. There is also a verse from the Bible that accompanies each story. 


Now, I happen to like history. In fact, this book contains a biography about one of my favorite theologians, Dietrich Bonhoeffer. That was yesterday's reading.


There are people in here such as, George Frideric Handel, the composer of Messiah, Susanna Wesley, the mother of John and Charles Wesley. On Feburary 23rd you will read about Polycarp, on April 18th you will meet John Foxe, who began compiling records of persecuted Christians. You will read about the life of many people, some good, some great and some that will cause you to shake your head at. You will discover just how far reaching Christianity is by reading about events in Italy, Scotland, Africa, tiny islands and more.


At the back of the book is a wonderful index of topics that would be helpful for anyone, including the preacher/teacher in your family or friends, even yourself! Want to read about marriage and romance? Look at February 10 or May 1 or one of the other dates listed. How about Hymnology..... several days cover that topic. 


This is a great book for that historian in your family or even for the one who doesn't know a lot about the history of Christianity. It's a wonderful devotional as well as a stepping stone to dig further into why we believe what we believe.


The author, Robert J. Morgan, did a superb job in compiling everything. All of the verses in this book are from the CEV translation, an easy translation for any one to read.
