Fellas, this book review is especially for you, not that the ladies wouldn't enjoy the book. But sometimes there just has to be a novel for the guys, and this is it!

Action-packed from the get-go. Suspense in tons. Steeped in intrigue. Code of honor. Fellas, it just doesn't get better than this.

Struecker and Gansky have written a great book. Not just great, but GREAT! You won't be able to stop reading this book. This isn't one you can lay aside after a few pages. Oh no, your hands and eyes will be glued to it until you finish it. 

Struecker and Gansky have called upon their various military and spiritual experiences to write a story that is alive with strong characters, from Amelia Lennon, the Army Foreign Affairs Officer and her daring thwarting of the kidnapping of the daughter of Kyrgyzstan's president to Master Sergeant J.J. Bartley and his Special Operations team.

How do I tell you about this book without spoiling it? Let's just say there is more to the story than just a blown kidnapping and rescue operation. 

There is chaos and fear. There is also faith and hope. And let's not forget, honor. 

A most compelling story that you won't be disappointed in. I would rank it right up there with Robert Ludlum, Tom Clancey and the rest of the great writers.

My review....

I found this book to be informative, helpful, encouraging and timely in the face of what we as Christians, individuals, and as a nation, need. 

Be The One! is a book that will cause you to take a look at your relationships with your family, your neighbors, your fellow Christians and most importantly, with God. 

With timely advise, Ambroselli also provides the reader with tools to bring about change in their life. 

At the end of each chapter he has a "For Further Reflection" page that will assist in making life changes. For instance, at the end of chapter 6, 'Communication that Matters,' a few of the questions are:

          "Am I listening when God Communicates? Am I obeying?"
          "Am I truly listening when others communicate?"
          "Am I being the one whose communications glorify God?"

Carefully reading each chapter, and there is only seventeen of them, truthfully answering the questions provided at the end of each chapter, and allowing God to bring about real change in our lives and hearts and mind, I believe it's possible to see change for ourselves, our future and our nation.

This is a book I would recommend for anyone wanting to see change personally and nationally. Because it does have to start in the individual, first.

I have read a number of Beth Wiseman's books, I really like her style of writing. She has a way of not only pulling you into the story but she makes you feel like you are a part of the story as well. 

In Need You Now, which is totally different than any of her Amish stories, Beth accomplishes to make you feel for each of her characters and live their lives. 

Written in contemporary times, about contemporary people who deal with the problems everyone else does, Need You Now, looks at and invites you into the lives of Darlene, her husband Brad, and their three children. 

Brad and Darlene move their family out of the big city into a small town, Round Up, Texas, because one of their children was headed for big trouble and going down the wrong path.

The adjustment isn't easy for any of them, especially for their oldest daughter, Grace. And Darlene is starting to go a bit stir crazy, so she decided to get a part-time job; with her husband's blessing.

Darlene working, Grace coping in dangerous ways, Brad getting grumpy and out of sorts, Chad the teenage son, and Ansley, a special daughter... all lead to a story that will make you laugh, cry, pray, and thankful that God does work in mysterious ways to bring us through all of our times of difficulties and trials. Even though we may turn our back on Him, He is always there, waiting, for us to say, "Need You Now."

When a personal crisis tested and strengthened her faith, award-winning journalist Beth Wiseman was advised by her agent to consider writing a Christian novel, particularly an Amish one.

Are you Amish and/or how do you know so much about the Amish? 

I am not Amish, but I have Amish connections and friends in Pennsylvania and Colorado who read the manuscripts prior to publication to make sure the books are inline with the Old Order Amish ways.

When does your next book come out? 

 Need you Now–my first contemporary not set in an Amish community–releases April 10, 2012.  Book #3 in the Land of Canaan series–His Love Endures Forever–releases in Oct. 2012.  An Amish Kitchen–a collection of novellas with authors Amy Clipston and Kelly Long–releases in November 2012.

Who is your favorite character out of all your books?

All of my characters are like my family, but if I had to choose…it would be Grandpa Jonas.  I love him.  He has many of the same wonderful qualities that my father had.

How do you come up with characters for your stories?

The characters choose me.  I start hearing their little voices in my head, and they tell me the story I need to write.  It’s true.

What advice do you have for inspiring writers?

Have thick skin and never give up.  It’s a subjective business that requires getting the right manuscript in front of the right editor at the right time.  I could wallpaper my study with rejection letters.

What I think about the book:


Let me begin by saying this book is not only timely but a must read for all Christians in this country. Pastor Jeffress doesn't hold back anything when talking about the decline of the United States. He doesn't just point out where we as a country have fallen, but he guides the Christians of this country to be the salt and light in a decaying, fallen society.


Christians can slow down the decay and eventual destruction of this country by prayerful consideration of who we vote into office, locally and federally; also, being aware of what is being voted into legislation. Listening and heeding what God says about our potential leaders and whether they meet His requirements, we can vote in more appropriate leaders. Be sure to read chapter 4, 'How a Christian Should Vote.' It will make things very clear, it sure did for me.

In Twilight's Last Gleaming, Pastor Jeffress discusses the most misunderstood word in America.... tolerance. He explains what true tolerance is verses the pseudotolerance that is being forced on every person in United States. This chapter was most enlightening to me.  

In the chapter 'For Pastors Only,' Pastor Jeffress writes not only to pastors but to us plain folk. Let's face it, evangelizing, building the body of Christ, being salt and light isn't just for the pastors. Pastors are to train, we are to run with that training and cause others to thirst and want the light of Christ we show. We never know when someone is ready to surrender their life to Jesus. Hence the reason we are to be ready at all times to give the reason for our hope. Pastor Jeffress shares a story from D.L. Moody's life that just brought me to tears. Never pass the opportunity to show the way to Christ Jesus.


All in all, this book is eye-opening, timely, challenging and so on target. Is America in her last days? I believe so. But, just as Pastor Jeffress believes, I think it can be delayed as long as every Christian votes, evangelizes, prepares, and continues to be salt and light.


Extremely well written, concise, and straight-forward, Pastor Jeffress boldly goes where frailer Christians fear to tread. Pulling the blinders of the eyes of Christians around the country, we now have decisions to make and a way to follow through with those decisions.


I can only stress again, this is a must read for any one in the United States who calls themselves a Christian.

I am excited about this Bible. When I got it in the mail a couple of weeks ago, I started delving into it. I have a granddaughter who will soon be nine years old, so she is who I had in mind when I was looking through this Bible.

NIV is a great translation for young readers. It's easy to understand and I don't think the young girls will have any trouble with it. I definitely prefer it to other translations that are running around.

The NIV FaithGirls! Bible has great spots for a girl to stop at and think about. Like the "Bring it On!" spots. Here she is reads something like: "When I have a fight with somebody, I:" Then she is given three choices for her actions. On the opposite page she'll find a spot that gives her three things to do in response to how she reacted. (I know, that's not very clear... but it really is cool.)

There is also through-out this Bible "In Your Own Words" section. Here a girl is encouraged to think about what she has just read and then a space is provided for her write a recap.

I really like the "Is there a Little....... In you?" parts. Here a girl reads about a character in the Bible, like Joseph and his brothers. Then she is asked four questions relating to them. She is then given a word of encouragement about her own situation.

Jammed pack with lots of wonderful things to help a tween girl understand the Bible better and have a closer walk with Jesus, the NIV FaithGirlz! Bible is a winner in my book.

I am sending this copy to my granddaughter in Arizona. I would encourage any parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, family friend..... well..... everyone to get one for the tween girl in your life.

As a kid I was crazy about horses and animals of all kinds and loved to draw (horses, mostly). Since I didn't have a horse, I wrote stories about them instead. My high-school English teacher sent one of my stories (about a couger) to a Scholastic magazine writing contest and it won First Place . . . and the rest, as they say, is history. I wanted to be a writer!

I grew up on the campus of a private Christian school in Seattle where my parents were teachers. A lovely childhood, though fairly sheltered. But college took me back to the Chicago area and a whole new world. My husband and I settled in the Chicago area soon after getting married, and even though we both grew up in solid Christian homes, our search to deepen our faith took the form of Christian community for much of our family life raising kids. Eventually the critical issue of racial reconciliation became the call of God upon our life, and we chose to immerse ourselves in African American and multi-cultural churches. Our world and our hearts expanded. What a gift these relationships of faith have been!

All during this time, my husband and I have been a writing team--writing books with expert resource people (as their co-authors) on a variety of topics (from medical ethics to stories of gang kids), then writing a whole series of historical fiction about great Christian heroes--40 titles in all!--called the Trailblazer books (and a series of "Hero Tales," five volumes in all). Now we are each writing adult fiction--the Yada Yada Prayer Group series for me, which was inspired by my real-life Bible study sisters, a multi-cultural group of feisty women going on 12 years now that God has used to turn my life upside down, or rather, rightside up! (I have to admit, sometimes my real world and my fictional world get a bit mixed up!)

I've been married for 40-plus years to the same wonderful man, we are truly partners in life. We raised two kids plus a Cambodian foster daughter, and together they've given us eight beautiful grandchildren! As one of my girlfriends and I agree: The best stress-busters in the world are pets, gardening, and grandkids!

FINALLY... MY REVIEW!

This is the first book I have ever read by Neta Jackson and I have to say I loved it!

I thoroughly enjoyed her style of writing, her characters, the premise, the plot, the whole shebang. Stand by Me is a story that is full-bodied, full of life, and full of the wonders of how God would use others in difficult times to remind us of His ever-presence.

Kat is a gem God uses to help shake Avis's world. Kat is not just energetic, enthusiastic and believes in God, she also dumpster-dives and salvages food for those around her, including Avis.

Avis is the worship-leader with high standing in her church, SouledOut, but finds her personal life is full of bumps and obstacles with her daughter and husband. 


Kat sees a strong, sold-out Christian in Avis and Avis sees an over-enthusiastic college girl disrupting her life. Kat sees a warm, mother-figure in Avis and Avis sees an annoying dumpster-diving girl.

I hope to see a sequel to this book. 

Stand by Me is a story worth reading, laughing about, crying over and just allowing God to point out the similar things He is working out in our own lives. A church is filled with many personalities, gifts, strengths and problems, but in the end, God is the one who uses each person to sharpen the other, to strengthen one another, to pray with and share in His wondrous love.

I highly recommend this book to everyone. It is well worth it.

Q: In what ways are our lives like mosaics?

To me, a mosaic is a fitting illustration of the way God can take the broken pieces of our lives and create something beautiful from them. My life has been filled with boulders and broken stones. Yet God, in His grace, has put those stones together in a mosaic to make me into a useful vessel for His glory.

I once saw a large mosaic but was too close to understand the design, so I backed up to get a better view. Just as the mosaic picture didn’t make sense until I got a broader perspective, I had to do the same thing with the struggles I’ve encountered. As I look back over my life from a different perspective, I can see why God has allowed me to undergo some of the challenges I’ve had.

I also realized that the more broken pieces in the mosaic, the more beautiful the picture and the greater its value. The more we’ve gone through, the more amazing the picture our lives can be when we have God’s perspective.

Q: How can Christians use the mosaic of their life to bring hope to others? 

People are often encouraged by my story, when they realize that God can use anyone to do His work—even the messed-up son of a professional wrestler who ended up earning his livelihood as an air-traffic controller and then a public creation speaker. Growing up I struggled with a lot of things other people do: an absentee father, my parents’ divorce, alcohol and drugs, run-ins with the law, even being homeless at one point.

No matter our background, we can all share our own life stories, our mosaic, to tell others how God has taken the broken pieces of our life and made something beautiful and valuable. Those rocky areas in our life can be steppingstones for sharing the love of Christ with others.

Q: You address the topic of racism in Reasons for Hope. Why was that issue important to include?

Sadly, evolutionary teaching promotes the idea that people are divided into different “races” with some “races” better than others, leading to all sorts of prejudice, hatred, and bloodshed. I know I was wrong in my racist attitudes when I was young, and many still believe the same way I did. That’s why I take such a strong stand on this issue today.

Ultimately, the issue of racism comes down to this: where did humans come from? When you reject what the Bible says about man’s origin, you will end up with all kinds of wrong beliefs. But biblically and scientifically, there is only one race of people—Homo sapiens—all made in the image of God. So we need to abandon the term “races” and instead talk about “cultures” or “people groups.”

We have to teach people the truth about racism, but what bothers me the most is that the church has dropped the ball on this issue. In fact, the church (in some instances) is one of the last bastions of racism and prejudice in America. And if we, as Christians, cannot grasp the need to eradicate racism, how can we expect the world to do that?

My Review:

I really enjoyed reading Reasons for Hope. I found Carl's writing style easy to follow, clear and direct. One of my favorite parts of the book is found on pages 28 and 29. Here he is talking about when the Hebrew children were crossing the river Jordan. (Joshua 3:15-17)

...As a reminder to the current and future generations of what a great thing God had done for His people, God commanded Joshua to build a memorial. Twelve men (one from each tribe) went to the riverbed, and each removed one stone. They carried these stones to where they camped on the western side of the Jordan and piled them up as a memorial.... The stone memorial on the riverbank testified to His faithfulness and served as a reminder to them and future generations that only God is their deliverer and their source of strength. The stones "cry out" the message to every generation that God is steadfast in His promises to deliver and bless His people.

Reading how God had His hand on Carl was insightful. I caused me to stop and look at how God has kept His hand on my own life even when I didn't realize it.

Being familiar with Answers In Genesis, I hadn't realized how close he worked with Ken Hamm and the organization. That was quite informative, especially since it caused Carl to step out of his comfort zone and begin public speaking.

A well written book, Reasons for Hope, is one I would chose to read again and recommend to those who may be struggling to find hope in their lives. Carl does a wonderful job in pointing his readers to our Great Hope, Christ Jesus. He also gives great arguments in why we should place our hope in the one true God, Jesus Christ.
